MI Paste and MI Paste Plus

Use of MI Paste is the professional way to remineralize and rejuvenate your teeth.  It helps to maintain your oral health through minimum intervention.  It is the simple, yet effective, modern medical approach to manage dental caries and various other conditions.

What is it?

MI Paste is a water-based, sugar-free cream that is applied to the tooth surface, restoring the oral mineral imbalances by replacing minerals. It can help strengthen your teeth as well as soothe sensitive tooth surfaces.  The active ingredient for the remineralization process is RECALDENT.

MI Paste Plus is enhanced with fluoride, which further promotes remineralization and protects teeth from tooth decay.  Because the fluoride acts in conjunction with the RECALDENT ingredient, it is more effective that fluoride alone.

Indications for MI Paste and MI Paste Plus:

  • High caries risk patients
  • Dry Mouth
  • Orthodontic patients (during and after)
  • Post bleaching
  • Pediatric patients
  • High plaque and special needs patients
  • Promotes remineralization of white spot lesions
  • Oncology patients

Ask Dr. McDade if you might be a good candidate for MI Paste or MI Paste Plus.  It comes in melon, mint, strawberry, tutti frutti and vanilla flavors.

Electric Toothbrushes

Your mouth deserves oral health for life.  Electric toothbrushes can help remove plaque, whiten teeth and improve you gum health.

Healthy gums are the foundation of good oral health, yet most adults suffer from gum disease at some point in their lives.  When left unattended, gum disease can lead to tooth loss and serious health problems in adults.

Your busy schedule doesn’t always make it easy to maintain the healthy lifestyle you are committed to leading.  The one area you do not want to neglect is your oral health.  Studies show taking good care of your teeth and gums has a significant impact on your well-being.

Your smile is often the first thing that other people notice about you.  It can make a powerful impression on others and can make you feel more self-confident.  A brighter whiter smile looks good on everyone.  A white smile is a healthier smile.

Our office has Phillips Sonicare and Oral B Braun electric toothbrushes that are available to our patients.  Next time you are in the office, ask one of our staff if they might be right for you.  They help guarantee better plaque removal.

Biotene (for dry mouth)

The Biotene product line encompasses toothpastes, mouth sprays, liquids, mouthwashes, gums and gels.  All Biotene products benefit from Biotene’s unique salivary enzyme-protein system, which offers oral comfort and helps strengthen saliva’s natural properties.  This product helps our patients have the confidence to talk and eat with ease throughout the day without dry mouth symptoms.

What is dry mouth?

Dry mouth is the condition in which you feel that there is not enough saliva in your mouth, making it difficult to talk, swallow and eat. Because saliva lubricates and protects your mouth from bacteria, any reduction of saliva can cause decay and contribute to bad breath.

Do I have dry mouth?

Dry mouth may be mild, moderate or severe.  You may not even be aware that you suffer from dry mouth if it is mild or moderate.  By the time it is severe, you may experience a sore burning mouth or tongue when eating, cracked lips, blisters and mouth ulcers.  Dr. McDade may see rampant decay, serious plaque levels and food debris, fungal infections, a “pebbled” tongue, and red and shiny tongue and cheeks.

What are the symptoms?

Many times, patients with dry mouth do not realize they have this condition until their saliva flow has already dropped by 50%.  Dry mouth symptoms can include a sore mouth; cracking in the corners of the mouth; a red mouth; difficulty eating certain foods – especially dry and spicy food; food just not tasting like it used to; difficulty speaking; and bad breath.

What are the causes?

There are four items that can cause a reduction in saliva flow:
1) Medicines - many medicines including over the counter cold remedies and antihistamines, anti-depressants, some beta blockers, anti-hypertensives and diuretics;
2) Age - a natural result of aging process, but particularly older people who tend to take more medicine;
3) Sjogrens Syndrome and Diabetes;
4) Cancer and its treatment - particularly radiation therapy.

What else can I do for my dry mouth?

Besides using biotene products, you can:

  • Sip water or sugar-free drinks often
  • Avoid drinks which dry out the mouth, such as caffeine-containing drinks (coffee, tea, some sodas) and alcohol
  • Chew sugar-free gum or candies to stimulate saliva flow
  • Avoid tobacco as this has a drying effect
  • Use a humidifier at night to keep the air full of moisture

Biotene products are available in Dr. McDade’s office.  If you need more information about dry mouth, ask Dr. McDade or one of our staff and we will assist you.

Salese, Dentiva (dry mouth lozenges)

These two lozenges contain xylitol, a natural sweetener that is both safe and healthy, even for diabetics.  They offer all the benefits of other products that soften the symptoms of dry mouth and they are more convenient than rinses and sprays.  Salese and Dentiva may be just the right thing to help keep your mouth moistened throughout the day.  Ask for samples when you are in Dr. McDade’s office.
